Alopecia
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia means loss of hair. Although usually considered as loss of hair on the scalp, the term can be used to describe the loss of hair anywhere on the body. The causes of hair loss are numerous and hard to find most of the times. Inherited characteristics and sex hormones play a significant role in hair loss in both men and women. It is a mistake to simply assume the onset of hair loss is inevitable and cannot be remedied.
Most common type of hair loss is Androgenic alopecia. It is the name given for pattern baldness. In androgenic alopecia the hair loss occurs slowly over years. It usually starts after age twenty. There is usually a family history of hair loss. In women, the hair gradually becomes thin throughout the scalp, very rarely bald spots can be observed. Men usually develop hair loss at the temples, followed by a gradual bald spot on crown of the head.
Types Of Alopecia:
Other than generalized hair loss, alopecia is paired with another words to give a specific type of hair loss. In this category there are three forms of Alopecia known as Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, and Alopecia Universalis.
In Alopecia Areata patches of hair fall out. In this type there is some hair regrowth, although another area may fall out and the duration is unpredictable. Although the hair loss mostly remains limited to the scalp in certain cases it can involve eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hair giving rise to bald spots anywhere in the body. The most typical presentation of alopecia areata is appearance of bald circular patches on the scalp. Hair falls out in round patches, size of the patches ranging from chickpea to the size of a small coin. The patient may have single or multiple such patches. The patches may remain limited or may spread to involve larger areas of the scalp.
Alopecia Totalis is by the total loss of hair on the entire scalp and there is no hair regrowth.
Alopecia Universalis is where there is complete hair loss to the entire body.
Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis are considered to be an auto-immune disorders in which the immune system of the body mistakenly attacks the hair follicles and destroys them. This leads to hair loss.
